Michael Bales, a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, began a research fellowship at the Foundation in September 2007. His research interests involve mining the literature to map scientific domains, predict research trends, identify new investigators, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. His approach is to combine text from scientific articles with social network data. The resulting models are then portrayed visually using interactive software and are used to support strategic planning.
