The Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute, invites applications for temporary full-time positions as Predoctoral Researchers. This program provides graduate students pursuing their PhD in a relevant field the opportunity to be employed at the CCQ for four months for the purpose of working on a research project with one or more CCQ staff mentors. Applications are invited for an Associate Research Scientist position at CCQ in the field of Computational Theory of Correlated Materials. Applicants should have a strong background in the development and use of computational methods combining electronic structure and many-body approaches for explaining and predicting properties of materials with strong electronic correlations, and a strong research agenda in the field of quantum materials.

Directed by Antoine Georges and co-directed by Andrew Millis, the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ), located in New York City, is a leading international center for the study of equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body quantum systems, with applications to condensed matter physics, materials science, chemistry and related fields. The development of the concepts, algorithms and code libraries needed to advance the field is fundamental to the work of the center. Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships in the Laboratory for Computational Vision, at the Center for Computational Neuroscience, within the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation. The research of the group is focused on analysis and representation of visual information, including empirical study of the structures of visual scenes, development of mathematical/statistical theories for representation and processing that structure, implementation and simulation of biologically plausible instantiations of these theories, and development of associated machine vision methods.

The Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute seeks a full-time open-rank research position with a strong focus on software development and support as part of its new initiative, Foundational Models for Science.  The final hire may be classified either as a Research Analyst or Flatiron Research Fellow, depending on educational background and experience.  Recent advances in machine learning, including Large Language Models and diffusion-based generative models have driven significant advances in Artificial Intelligence. The Flatiron Institute seeks to leverage these ideas to develop the next generation of AI-powered scientific analysis tools, seeking more powerful and more interpretable models with broad applications to many scientific disciplines. Our group includes researchers from multiple scientific disciplines ranging from machine learning, to astrophysics, biology, neuroscience and quantum computing.

The Initiative for Computational Catalysis (ICC) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute, invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist. The initial appointment for an Associate Research Scientist is three years, with a possible extension of another three years. Research Scientist positions are not term-limited. Starting dates are flexible, typically between August 2024 and November 2024. Applications will be reviewed beginning in Fall 2023 and considered on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. Associate Research Scientists/Research Scientists at ICC are researchers who develop theoretical concepts, algorithms and codes, and apply these to obtain new insights into the electronic structure and dynamics of catalyzed chemical reactions.

Flatiron Research Fellows in CCB are individuals at the postdoctoral level with backgrounds in one or more of the following areas: applied mathematics, statistics, computational biology, biophysics, computer science, engineering, mathematical physics, or related disciplines. Reporting to Research Scientists, Data Scientists or the Center Director, as appropriate, Fellows are expected to carry out an active research program that can be independently directed and/or involve substantial collaboration with other members of CCB or the Flatiron Institute. In addition to their research, Fellows help build the rich scientific community at CCB and the Flatiron Institute by participating in seminars, colloquia, and group meetings; developing their software, mathematical and computational expertise through internal education opportunities; and sharing their knowledge through scientific publications, presentations, and/or software releases, with the financial support of the Institute. Fellows have access to the Flatiron Institute’s powerful scientific computing resources.

CCB seeks a full-time Associate Research Scientist to develop and design new tools using computer vision to enable new discoveries in biology, and, more broadly, computational science.  Areas of current interest include fluorescence reconstruction and image restoration for multi-channel microscopy, self-supervised age estimation using temporal data, and pose estimation for molecular structures in cryo-electron microscopy. However, we are looking for someone who will both collaborate with current work but also pursue their own creative research ideas.
 
We are seeking an Associate Research Scientist with experience in image processing, computer vision, and deep learning research. The ideal candidate will:
 
• Enable CCB biologists and biophysicists to denoise, segment, track, and model biological processes using microscopy
 
• Utilize the latest techniques in computer vision for biology such as self-supervised and contrastive learning, continuous estimation, super-resolution and interpretability

Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) in the NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis Group (SueYeon Chung, PI) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation, whose focus is on understanding computation in the brain and artificial neural networks by: (1) analyzing geometries underlying neural or feature representations, embedding and transferring information, and (2) developing neural network models and learning rules guided by neuroscience. As a member of SCC, the Infrastructure Software Engineer will provide support for researchers developing, building, documenting, packaging, releasing, and deploying software tools, libraries, and servers; implement automated build and test CI (continuous integration) workflows on Github, Jenkins, and other platforms for these packages as specified by researchers and developers; and work with others in SCC to maintain and develop tools and components supporting storage, networking, and monitoring systems.

As a member of the SCC team, the HPC Systems Engineer is responsible for the deployment, operation and maintenance of the Flatiron Institute’s Scientific computing infrastructure. The responsibilities include hardware monitoring and replacement for large scale HPC clusters with high-performance interconnects such as InfiniBand and Ethernet.

The Institute of Theoretical Physics (IPhT) of the CEA-Saclay (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), jointly with the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute, invites applications for a joint position in the area of computational quantum condensed matter physics. The position consists in a full-time CEA permanent position at IPhT/CEA-Saclay, of which the first three years will be spent on “detachement” as a full time Associate Research Scientist employed at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ). The Center for Computational Neuroscience (CCN) invites applications for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRFs – our designation for Postdoctoral Fellows) in the Connectomics project of CCN’s neural circuits and algorithms (NCA) group. The goal of the CCN NCA group is to understand how the brain analyzes large and complex datasets streamed by sensory organs in order to aid efforts at building artificial neural systems and treating mental illness. The Connectomics project of the NCA group, specifically, is focused on reconstruction the brain wiring diagram of the microscopic wasp utilizing automated high-throughput reconstruction software, results that are then verified by a team of research analysts who proofread and annotate the software’s work; using this method, the Connectomics project has assembled the largest connectome to date based on synapse count. While the current open position is in the neural circuits and algorithms group only, CCN scientists are encouraged to collaborate across research groups and the wider Flatiron Institute. The Center for Computational Biology (CCB) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute is actively seeking enthusiastic, full-time post-doctoral Flatiron Research Fellows to join its Biophysical Modeling Group. The Biophysical Modeling group focuses on the modeling and simulation of complex systems that arise in biology and soft condensed matter physics. Areas of interest include the dynamics of complex and active materials, and aspects of collective behavior and self-organization in both natural systems (e.g., inside the cell) and synthetic ones. Ongoing projects focus on understanding the organization and dynamics of the nucleus, the structure and assembly of spindles, the positioning and transport of cellular organelles, and fluid-structure problems in biology. To address these, often in close collaboration with experimental collaborators, we build numerical and theoretical models from the ground up, revealing how the known mechanics of individual components give rise to collective behavior. Many such phenomena occur only within dense, highly interacting systems, inaccessible to standard techniques. To probe such regimes requires the development of fast and scalable algorithms for many-component systems, and of coarse-grained models that can be analyzed and simulated. Strong applicants with backgrounds in applied and computational mathematics, biophysics, engineering, statistical inference, and related fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

CCM seeks a full-time software engineer and scientific programmer to help build, improve, and support high-quality, open-source software libraries relating to efforts within the center.  Areas of interest include scientific computing, partial differential equations, neuroscience, imaging, machine learning, statistics, signal processing, fast algorithms, and mathematical libraries. The Software Engineer will:
• implement, test and optimize mathematical, statistical, and machine-learning algorithms, in languages such as C, C++, Python, MATLAB, and Fortran
• develop interfaces, packages and installers, documentation, user support, and training courses;
• develop user interfaces and collaborate with SCC and other centers within Flatiron and the larger scientific community and
• lead and improve open-source software practices.
 
The software engineer will report to a research scientist at CCM and will join a growing team of developers within CCM and the other centers across Flatiron Institute. The position will be based, and have a principal office, at the Simons Foundation in New York City.
