The Simons Foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division invites applications for Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians to stimulate collaboration in the field primarily through the funding of travel and related expenditures.
Rationale
The goal of the program is to substantially increase collaborative contacts between accomplished, active mathematicians in the United States, who do not otherwise have access to funding that allows support for travel and visitors.
Basis for Awards
Awards will be based on the quality and significance of the applicant’s previous research and on the likely impact the collaboration grant will have on future research, both for the applicant and the applicant’s graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows. Other criteria include publication in high-quality journals, the applicant’s current and recent Ph.D. students, and the applicant’s travel goals and general research activity.
Level and Duration of Funding
Each collaboration grant provides $8,400 per year for five years: up to $6,000 per year for collaboration, travel and research expenses for the awardee; up to $1,000 per year in discretionary funds for the awardee’s department to enhance the research atmosphere of the department; and up to 20 percent ($1,400) per year in indirect costs. The five-year grant will commence September 1, 2019, and end August 31, 2024.
Allowable Expenses
- Collaboration, travel and research funds for the awardee (up to $6,000 per year): Eligible expenses in this category are
- scientific travel by the awardee, the awardee’s graduate and Ph.D. students and other members of the awardee’s department (at the sole discretion of the awardee) per the institution’s travel policies — Parking, hotel, taxi, registration and other related travel and conference costs are allowable. International travel is permitted and there are no restrictions on airline carriers.
- the expense of scientific visits (including meals) to the awardee’s home institution by the awardee’s collaborators and other scientific visitors of interest to the awardee per the institution’s travel policies — International travel is permitted, and there are no restrictions on airline carriers. An honorarium for speakers is allowed.
- up to $1,500 per year in other research expenses, such as computers, computer support, publication expenses, stationery, supplies, books and membership fees to professional organizations.
- Discretionary funds for the awardee’s department (up to $1,000 per year): Eligible expenses in this category include support for departmental colloquia and seminars, as well as refreshments and other research-related amenities. Support for student orientations, prospective student visits and other departmental activities are allowed. Funds may also be used to subsidize meals for faculty, students and visitors. In addition, these funds may be used to help pay for furniture and research infrastructure, such as copiers, computer servers and computer support. Funds should be expended at the discretion of the department chair.
These grants may not be used for salary or teaching buyouts, whether for the awardee or others. Only travel between the grant start and end date will be covered by this grant. Expenses incurred before September 1, 2019, for travel during the grant period are permissible.
Please see the foundation’s grant policies on our website for further guidelines. Note that travel expenses are not capped at $4,000 per year, per individual for this program.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, an individual must
- have a Ph.D. degree and hold a tenure-track or tenured position with a full-time appointment in a mathematics department with a Ph.D. degree granting program, at an institution in the United States;
- have a current record of active research and publication in high-quality journals; and
- not currently hold any other external PI or PI equivalent grants, as outlined below, with an end date after September 1, 2019.
There are no citizenship requirements.
Unspent Funds
Any funds not spent in one year of the grant may be automatically spent in subsequent years without prior approval, but unspent funds at the end of the grant must be returned to the foundation. No-cost extension requests will be considered.
Reporting
An annual progress report and financial statement are due no later than 60 days after the completion of each grant year.
Other Support
Collaboration grant awardees may not hold any other external PI or PI equivalent grants. This includes other applicable Simons Foundation funding but excludes conference grants — where support only covers travel expenses for the conference participants and does not provide any support for the applicant’s own research — or grants specifically to support students/student activities. Awardees are obligated to inform the foundation if they receive any such funding during their collaboration grant period. If this occurs, their collaboration grant will be terminated at the end of the current year (August 31). An awardee may apply to the foundation for another collaboration grant for the period after the completion of the other grant(s).
Termination of Funding
The collaboration grant will be terminated if the awardee receives other sources of funding as described above in Other Support or if annual reports are delinquent.
Number of Awards
The foundation will award up to 140 grants per year.

- Applicant: This information is preloaded from the applicant’s professional profile. Please indicate the applicant’s website, if applicable.
- Organization/Institution: This information is preloaded from the institutional profile. For both pre- and post-award management, select the appropriate signing official and financial officer from the drop-down list or enter the email address of a new official and click on Add. Click on the Save or Close Window link; the official will now be listed as the assigned signing official or financial/fiscal officer. Please see the Simons Foundation grant policies for a description of the responsibilities of the signing official and financial officer.
- Abstract & Mathematics Subject Classifications:
- Provide a brief summary of the applicant’s most recent research, particularly that which is relevant to future collaboration and travel plans. The Abstract text box has a 3,000-character limit.
- Please select one primary Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC2010) as it applies to your research in the last five years and up to two secondary classifications. Please note that your choices will be used to select the most appropriate reviewers. Please give the primary classification a majority weighting.

It is not necessary to include internal funding, this current application, or a currently held Collaboration Grant. To add entries, please click the “+” link and all entries previously saved in the applicant’s Professional Profile will show. Please select the applicable support and click on the Save and Close button.
To add new Other Support entries, click the “+” link and then click the Create New Other Support button on the bottom right-hand side of the window. By default, this entry will be added to the applicant’s Professional Profile, unless the option Add to Profile is not checked. Enter the required fields and click on the Save and Close button.
