Ingrid Daubechies, Ph.D.

James B. Duke Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering, Duke University
Scientific Advisory Board, Flatiron Institute

Ingrid Daubechies earned her Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She is best known for her breakthroughs in wavelets and contributions to digital signal processing. Some wavelet bases she constructed have become a household name in signal analysis (Daubechies wavelets); these and other computational techniques she developed have been incorporated into the JPEG 2000 standard for image compression. Apart from her work on wavelets, she has contributed to other seminal advances in time-frequency analysis.

Along with her commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of mathematicians, Daubechies continues to break new ground in mathematics research and expand its impact outside of her discipline, focusing on the analysis of signals and inverse problems in a wide range of settings, with applications ranging from fMRI, geophysics, paleontology and the study of fine art paintings.
