Quantum Café is CCQ’s ongoing seminar series: open to all bona fide members of the greater NYC scientific community and held every second week, Quantum Café presents a series of informal, highly interactive talks, typically by external speakers, which present the most interesting recent developments and open questions in our field.
Erez Berg is a theoretical physicist, and is interested in quantum many-body systems, such as electrons in solids. The interplay between the laws of quantum mechanics and the complexity of materials leads to a variety of fascinating emergent phenomena, from topological phases of matter to high temperature superconductivity. Berg studied how such phenomena arise, both in and out of equilibrium, in naturally occurring and artificial systems
He was awarded the Morris L. Levinson Prize in Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Award for Research Cooperation and High Excellence in Science, funded by the Federal German Ministry for Education and Research and administered by the Minerva Foundation. He is also the recipient of an Alon Fellowship from Israel’s Council of Higher Education.
Berg spent six years of military service in the Theoretical Physics Division of Rafael-Israel’s Armament Development Authority. He received a BA and MSc, both summa cum laude, in physics from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. He then earned a PhD in physics from Stanford University, where he received the Paul H. Kirkpatrick Award for excellence in teaching. He completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Physics at Harvard University. Most recently, he was the Dewey David Stone and Harry Levine Career Development Chair in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science.
