Abstract

The membranes of living cells are fundamentally driven out of equilibrium by a variety of active processes. In particular, internal membrane bound organelles in the trafficking pathway, such as the Golgi and endosomes, are subject to persistent active fission and fusion. An important problem in cell biology is the biogenesis of such organelles and their inheritance across cell division. I will discuss our recent work on the nonequilibrium control of shape, size and number of the system of Golgi cisternae.
