Report
The challenge of finding 3D optimum magnetic fields with hidden symmetries encompasses mathematical and computational problems of great subtlety, straddling optimization theory, plasma physics, dynamical systems, and the analysis of partial differential equations. The plenary talks presented at the meeting demonstrated that interdisciplinary breadth, and showcased new results obtained by the Collaboration in the first year. An overview of the Collaboration and the principal new results (A. Bhattacharjee) was followed by a presentation of the seminal experimental results from the principal stellarator experiments in the world (T. S. Pedersen) and plans for a novel electron-positron experiment (E. Stenson). A lucid tutorial on mathematical foundations of stellarator theory (P. Helander) was followed by a treatment of quasi-symmetry in the elegant language of differential forms, an exploration of whether exact quasi-symmetry is realizable, and the derivation of a novel form of Grad-Shafranov equation for quasi-symmetric configurations (R. MacKay). A computational method and code, which calculates magnetostatic equilibria as extrema of a constrained energy functional, and an external coil geometry that can produce a given equilibrium was discussed (S. Hudson). New results were presented on constructing magnetic fields with hidden symmetries based on a direct method which employs analytic Taylor expansions, demonstrating that there remains a vast space of stellarator design that remains to be explored by extant experiments (M. Landreman). A new analytic theory of turbulent transport was presented which demonstrates how 3D shaping can be used to reduce turbulent transport in stellarators. Last but not least, the promise of mathematical and computational developments in robust, multi-objective optimization theory in the context of SIMSOPT was discussed (D. Bindel).
Four out of five Advisory Board members of the Collaboration participated in the meeting, and met with the team after the meeting.
