The Simons Foundation is now accepting applications from undergraduate students to participate in the Simons Foundation Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Neuroscience, or SURFiN, for the 2023–2024 academic year. The program’s goal is to spark and sustain interest in neuroscience among undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience research.
SURFiN is a joint initiative from the Simons Collaboration on the Global Brain (SCGB), the Simons Collaboration on Plasticity and the Aging Brain (SCPAB) and the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI). The program is an expansion of the SCGB Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which accepted its first class in 2021.
SURFiN fellows will gain hands-on in-person research experience in neuroscience labs supported by the Simons Foundation under the mentorship of doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scientists. Prior laboratory experience is not required. This year’s opportunities are located in 27 cities across the United States, Canada and Europe.
The program provides funding for each fellow to receive $7,500 for their work, equivalent to $25 per hour for 10 hours a week over 30 weeks. Additionally, fellows will receive a $2,000 resource stipend, participate in virtual and in-person community-building activities, and travel to attend a Spring 2024 research symposium at the Simons Foundation in New York City.
The application deadline, including recommendation letter submission, is May 4, 2023. For additional information about the program, including eligibility requirements, visit the SURFiN program page. Potential applicants are also encouraged to attend a virtual informational webinar on Wednesday, April 5, at noon ET. For registration and additional information, click here.
