Title: Representational Drift in Hippocampus and Cortex
Abstract: Recent studies revealed that place codes and sensory codes gradually change (or drift) over days and weeks, calling into question the notion that stable neural codes underlie stable memory and perception. I will present results from experiments in which we used optical imaging to study hippocampal and cortical neural codes longitudinally and will discuss the analysis and interpretation of these data in a framework of population coding. Specifically, I will show that experience and passage of time have district effects on drift in hippocampal representations, that spatial memory content is maintained without relying on the long-term stability of hippocampal representations, and that properties of drift may reveal constraints at the system level.
