Barry Smith, Ph.D.

Senior Research Scientist, CCM, Flatiron Institute

Barry Smith is a Senior Research Scientist for the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Mathematics. Previously, Smith was an Argonne Distinguished Fellow in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at the Argonne National Laboratory. Smith was also a Senior Fellow in the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago, a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and an Assistant Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. Most notably, Smith is a developer of the PETSc software library. In 2015, the PETSc development team won the SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering. In 2010, Smith also received the E.O. Lawrence Award for outstanding contribution in research and development supporting the Department of Energy. His interest includes numerical analysis, the iterative solution of algebraic systems, and numerical software libraries. Smith obtained his B.S. in Mathematics from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science from New York University.
