From 2009-2012 he was a NASA Einstein Fellow at Princeton, before joining the Columbia Department of Physics in 2013. Metzger’s research is in theoretical high energy astrophysics, on topics including gamma-ray bursts; supernovae; fast radio bursts; accretion processes; compact objects; nucleosynthesis (astrophysical origin of the elements); and the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. His awards include the New Horizons Breakthrough Prize in Physics and the Bruno Rossi Prize of the American Astronomical Society.
