Michele Fornea, Ph.D.

Columbia University

Michele Fornea will be joining the Department of Mathematics at Columbia University as a postdoctoral fellow after a year at Princeton with Professor Christopher Skinner.

The unifying theme of Fornea’s research is the arithmetic of elliptic curves, a subject that leverages different aspects of number theory, arithmetic geometry and representation theory. He uses p-adic deformation techniques applied to modular forms and automorphic L-functions to study the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.

Fornea completed his Ph.D. at McGill University under the guidance of professors Henri Darmon and Adrian Iovita. Previously, he received master’s degrees from Université Paris-Sud and Concordia University while enrolled in the ALGANT program.
