Life is all about connection. Sometimes those connections are easy to feel and see. We find them in friendships old and new, between a dog and its owner, and in the quiet act of holding a warm cup of tea as sunlight touches your face. But what about the connections that are harder to see, the fundamental connections that make us who we are? How to Connect Two Bodies, primarily shot on Super8 in New York City, is an experiential short documentary that captures the feeling of two things becoming one. In the film, writer, director, producer and editor Grace Zhang and Flatiron Institute Research Fellow Bargeen Turzo invite us to explore the unseen bonds between proteins that constitute the building blocks of life, and the parallels we might find in the world around us.

The film, which you can stream now, was made as part of Symbiosis, a two-week program that pairs six scientists with six filmmakers. Each pair is tasked with creating short, boundary-pushing films. This year’s Symbiosis program is a component of the Simons Foundation’s Researcher Engagement program, an initiative of the foundation’s Science, Society & Culture division.
