The 21st century holds promise for designed manipulation of biological organisms for engineering, and for informed personalized medical intervention. A prerequisite for realizing these dreams is a quantitative, predictive understanding of living systems, which in turn requires a new type of science that combines biological expertise with novel methodologies and theoretical abstraction. In this talk, Terry Hwa will explore the opportunities that exist at this new frontier using several examples at the molecular, cellular and population levels.
