Life Sciences Awards

These awards provide support to launch the careers of outstanding investigators whose research will advance their field.

A partnership of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Simons Foundation provides grants to early-career scientists addressing biomedical and fundamental biological problems. The Simons Foundation supports 20 HHMI-Simons Faculty Scholars.

This joint program with the Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund provides awards to early-career investigators.

Fellows carry out independent research on topics related to the origins of life at research institutions in any country, with mentors who are not SCOL investigators. Participation in collaboration meetings provides opportunities for fellows to interact with colleagues in different disciplines. Fellows are chosen through an annual competition.

This program, launched in 2017, provides fellowships to support research on fundamental problems in marine microbial ecology. The emphasis is on fellows with training in different fields, including theory and modeling, who want to apply their experience to understanding the role of microorganisms in shaping ocean processes, and vice versa.

In partnership with other foundations, this division supports fellows for research on fundamental problems, with a focus on microbial ecology and evolution.
