Lizhong Zhang, Ph.D.

Flatiron Research Fellow, Exoplanets, CCA, Flatiron Institute

Lizhong Zhang joined the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) as a Flatiron Research Fellow in 2024. He develops numerical algorithms to solve magnetohydrodynamics and radiative transfer, and conducts large-scale simulations to study and model the physics of accretion onto compact objects. He is particularly interested in high-energy astronomical systems where radiative processes and general relativity play dominant roles in driving the dynamics, such as accretion onto strongly magnetized neutron stars and black holes.

Lizhong completed his Ph.D. in physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his bachelor’s in physics and astronomy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Before joining CCA, Lizhong was a postdoctoral member at the Institute for Advanced Study.
