Shmuel Weinberger, Ph.D.

Shmuel Weinberger is the Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago. His work is primarily in geometry and topology, including quantitative and applied aspects.

He has written books on the topology of spaces with singularities, the application of ideas from logic to Riemannian geometry and on the role of the fundamental group in global geometry.

He received his Ph.D. from the Courant Institute in 1982, and after two years as an Instructor at Princeton, came to the University of Chicago. Weinberger has also held positions at University of Pennsylvania, Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences, MSRI, and Hebrew University. From 2012-17, he was Chair of the Mathematics department at University of Chicago.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
