Alexis Stutzman Lewis, Ph.D.

Columbia University

Alexis Stutzman Lewis is a postdoctoral research scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Bianca Jones Marlin at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute. She holds a Ph.D. in genetics and molecular biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine and a B.S. in biological sciences from the University of Chicago.

As a graduate student in the laboratories of Drs. Jill Dowen and Daniel McKay, she identified epigenetic determinants of genome organization. Her research focused on the role of H3K9 methylation and a protein that binds this methylation, heterochromatin protein 1a (HP1a), in maintaining 3-dimensional arrangement of DNA within the nucleus. In the laboratory of Dr. Marlin, she currently investigates the molecular mechanisms by which stress influences olfactory sensory neuron development and how learned experiences are passed through generations.
