Brian Hoffmann, Ph.D.

Director of Protein Sciences and Mass Spectrometry Services, The Jackson Laboratory
Brian Hoffmann headshot.

Brian Hoffman received his Ph.D in molecular and cellular pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his B.S. in biology with a chemistry minor from Saint Norbert College. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and became an assistant professor in its Department of Biomedical Engineering. He later joined The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) as director of protein sciences and mass spectrometry services .

Hoffmann’s lab applies state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based technologies for high-throughput discovery and targeted proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics across numerous physiological systems. At JAX, he participates in numerous research initiatives focused on a diverse array of topics, including aging, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He also continues to push innovation in the mass spectrometry imaging and high-sensitivity proteomics spaces (supported by multiple NIH S10 Awards), including novel methods for patch-proteomics analysis of single neurons and mass spectrometry imaging lipidomics/metabolomics/proteomics.
