Joseph Visone, Ph.D.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Joseph Visone is a postdoctoral research scholar in the laboratory of Naama Aviram at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Visone earned his B.S. in cell and molecular biology from Binghamton University and received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from Weill Cornell Medicine under the direction of Kirk Deitsch.

During his Ph.D., Visone studied the molecular mechanisms of antigenic variation in the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria. By leveraging single cell RNA sequencing, he discovered that malaria parasites exhibit greater levels of transcriptional plasticity than previously recognized. These findings alter our understanding of chronic, asymptomatic malaria infections common in malaria endemic countries. His postdoctoral work in the Aviram lab is focused on understanding the molecular dynamics of bacterial host defense mechanisms.
