Simons Society of Fellows Junior Fellow Thomas Werkmeister Receives Richard L. Greene Dissertation Award

The American Physical Society (APS) has awarded the Richard L. Greene Dissertation Award in Experimental Condensed Matter or Materials Physics to Thomas Werkmeister. The prize recognizes doctoral thesis research of exceptional quality and importance in experimental condensed matter or experimental materials physics.
Werkmeister is a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University and a Junior Fellow in the Simons Society of Fellows. His research focuses on developing high-quality electronic devices to enhance our understanding of fundamental physics and ultimately create new technologies that utilize quantum coherence. In its prize announcement, APS lauded Werkmeister for his “pioneering investigation of unusual integer and fractional quantum Hall states in a graphene-based quantum Hall interferometer.” He was previously awarded the 2024 Boeing Quantum Creators Prize for this research.
Werkmeister received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University under the mentorship of Philip Kim. Previously, he obtained his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh.
